Structuring a paper

From the wide field to your specific question, in about a page

Establish the territory, name the gap, state the question — and stop before it becomes a review.

An introduction moves from the general area to your specific question. Establish why the topic matters, summarize what is already known, name the gap or problem that remains, then state your aim, question, or hypothesis. Keep it narrower than feels natural — the introduction sets up your study rather than surveying the whole field.

Step by step

Open on the problem, not on the universe

Your first sentence should already be inside the specific area of the paper. Name the phenomenon and why it is unresolved rather than announcing that the topic is important. Sentences that would fit at the front of any paper in your discipline are the ones to delete.

Establish the territory in a paragraph or two

Summarize what the field has settled, at the level of claims rather than individual studies. Cite reviews and landmark work rather than everything you have read. This is orientation, so a reader outside your subfield can follow the argument.

Narrow to the unresolved point

Move from what is known to the specific thing that is not. Signal the turn explicitly — “however”, “what remains unclear is”, “these accounts diverge on” — so the reader knows the setup has ended. This is the hinge of the whole introduction.

Name the gap and say why it matters

State precisely what has not been examined, and what would change if it were. Ground the gap in limitations you have just described rather than asserting that nobody has done it. A gap tied to consequences is much harder for a reviewer to dismiss.

State the aim, question, or hypothesis explicitly

Give the reader a sentence they can point to: “this study asks whether…” or “we hypothesized that…”. Use the same wording later in the discussion when you answer it. Implied questions are the most common reason a well-written introduction still reads as unfocused.

Add a contribution sentence

Say what the paper adds — a new measure, a test in an untested population, a reconciliation of conflicting results. One sentence, sized honestly. This is what an editor uses to decide whether the paper is worth sending out for review.

Rewrite the opening once the paper is finished

Introductions drafted early describe the study you intended. Return at the end and check that the question you set up is the one the discussion answers, and that the gap still matches the contribution. This pass usually takes an hour and improves the paper more than any other hour you spend.

The funnel, and how steep to make it

The standard shape is a funnel: broad context, narrowing background, the gap, then your question. What varies between fields is where the funnel starts. Specialist journals expect you to begin close to the specific problem, while broad-scope and interdisciplinary venues allow a wider opening because the readership is mixed.

Most drafts start too wide. The opening that begins with the global significance of the general topic feels safe, but it spends a paragraph telling experts something they already believe. Open two or three levels down: not “education is important”, but “feedback improves learning, yet the conditions under which it does so are contested”.

The funnel should be monotonic. Once you have narrowed, do not widen again — a paragraph of general context arriving after the gap statement resets the reader’s sense of scope. If a piece of background is needed to understand the question, it belongs before the narrowing, not after it.

Writing a gap statement a reviewer cannot dismiss

The gap statement is where papers are most often rejected in principle rather than in detail. Claims of pure novelty are fragile because a reviewer only needs one counterexample: “no study has examined X” invites a citation you missed. Framing the gap as a limitation of existing work is both more defensible and more accurate.

Weak: “No research has investigated feedback timing in online courses.” Stronger: “Existing evidence on feedback timing comes almost entirely from same-session laboratory tasks, so it is unclear whether the benefit survives the delays that are structural to online courses — where marking is typically batched by week.” The second version does not depend on nobody having done it; it depends on what the existing evidence can support.

Gaps also come in kinds, and naming the kind sharpens the sentence. A population gap, a contextual gap, a methodological gap, a contradiction between two lines of evidence, or a newly available method that makes an old question answerable. Each of these implies a different justification for your design, which is useful when you reach the methods.

Aims, objectives, questions, hypotheses

These four are related but not interchangeable, and using them loosely makes an introduction feel imprecise. An aim states the overall purpose; objectives break it into the steps you took; a research question is what you are asking, phrased as a question; a hypothesis is a testable prediction with a stated direction. Quantitative papers usually need at least a question and often a hypothesis, and qualitative work usually stops at aims and questions.

The phrasing you choose here has to survive to the end of the paper. If the introduction asks whether feedback timing affects retention and the discussion answers a question about feedback quality, something has drifted. Copy the sentence forward and reuse its wording deliberately in the discussion — repetition of a key phrase is clarity, not poor style.

Where you have several questions, number them and keep the numbering consistent across the results and discussion. Readers rely on it more than authors expect, particularly in papers with multiple studies or several outcome measures. If a numbered question has no matching result, either an analysis is missing or the question should not be there.

How much literature belongs here

In a journal article the introduction usually absorbs the literature review, and the correct amount is only what makes the gap intelligible. That means claims about the state of the field, supported by representative citations, rather than a tour of individual studies. Detailed engagement with specific papers can wait for the discussion, where you compare them with your own results.

In a thesis the two are separate: a short introduction orients the reader and states the aims, and the literature review chapter does the extended work. The most common problem is a thesis introduction that duplicates the review chapter, which then leaves nothing new for the chapter to do. Write the introduction as a map, not a summary.

A practical constraint helps here. Give yourself a citation budget for the introduction and spend it on reviews, landmark papers, and the studies whose limitations create your gap. If a citation is doing no work in the argument, it does not belong in this section even if the paper was useful to you.

The last paragraph: roadmap, contribution, or both

Conventions differ on how to close. In many empirical fields the introduction ends with the aim and hypotheses and no roadmap at all, because IMRaD makes the structure predictable. In humanities articles, long theses, and computer science papers, an explicit roadmap paragraph is standard and genuinely useful, because the structure is not predictable in advance.

When you do include a roadmap, keep it short and concrete — what each section establishes, not what each section is called. “Section 3 shows that the effect depends on delay” is worth reading; “Section 3 presents the methodology” is not. Two or three sentences is normally enough.

Whether or not you include the results in the introduction is also field-specific. Some disciplines, particularly in the natural sciences and computer science, expect the main finding to appear in the final paragraph so the reader knows the outcome before the details. Others treat it as spoiling the structure. Check recent issues of your target journal before deciding.

FAILURE MODES

What goes wrong, and what to do instead

Opening with a sentence about the general importance of the topic or a definition from a dictionary.

Start inside the specific problem. Delete the first paragraph of your draft and check whether the second one makes a better opening — it usually does.

Asserting novelty as the entire justification for the study.

Frame the gap as a limitation in what current evidence can support, and say what would change if it were filled. Novelty claims are easy for a reviewer to falsify.

Letting the introduction expand into a full literature review.

Cite at the level of claims, using reviews and landmark work, and save detailed engagement with individual studies for the discussion.

Never stating the research question in a single sentence.

Write an explicit “this study asks whether…” sentence and keep it even if it feels blunt. Readers look for it, and its absence is felt as vagueness.

A question in the introduction that no longer matches the one answered in the discussion.

Rewrite the introduction last, and reuse the same key phrasing in both places so the paper closes the loop it opened.

Filling the introduction with definitions of terms every reader already knows.

Define only terms you use in a contested or non-standard sense, and define them where they first do work in the argument.

Questions writers ask about this

How long should a research paper introduction be?

Commonly 10 to 15 percent of the paper — roughly 500 to 1,000 words in a standard journal article, or two to four paragraphs in a short-format paper. Thesis introductions are proportionally shorter than people expect, because the literature review chapter carries the background. Check whether your target journal caps the word count of individual sections.

Should I write the introduction first or last?

Draft it early to fix your direction, then rewrite it last. The final version has to set up the study you actually completed, including any change of emphasis that emerged from the results. Many experienced authors write the methods and results first for exactly this reason.

What tense should an introduction use?

Present tense for established knowledge and for the problem, present perfect for the state of research, and past tense for what a specific study did. Your own aim is usually stated in present or past — “this study examines” or “we set out to test”. Avoid the future tense, which belongs to proposals.

What is the difference between an introduction and a literature review?

The introduction argues for your study: it establishes context, identifies the gap, and states the question. A literature review analyzes the body of work itself, organized by theme. In a journal article the introduction usually absorbs the review; in a thesis they are separate chapters with different jobs, and duplicating one inside the other is the common mistake.

Should I state my hypotheses in the introduction?

In hypothesis-testing research, yes — at the end of the introduction, with the direction specified and the reasoning behind each one clear from the preceding paragraphs. Exploratory and qualitative studies state aims and questions instead. Do not add hypotheses after the fact to match results you already have; label post-hoc analyses as exploratory in the results.
