Structuring a paper

Turning results into an argument about what they mean

Answer the question first, interpret against the literature, bound the claims, then say what follows.

A discussion section explains what your results mean. Open by answering your research question directly, interpret each key finding against the existing literature — including the studies that disagree — acknowledge the limitations that genuinely bound your claims, and close with what follows for theory or practice. Interpret the findings; do not restate them.

Step by step

Answer the research question in the first paragraph

Begin with a direct answer to the question you posed in the introduction, in plain language and without statistics. A reader who stops after two sentences should know what the study concluded. Everything that follows is the argument for that answer.

Take the findings in order of importance

Discuss the primary finding first, then secondary ones, regardless of the order they appeared in the results. Give each its own paragraph or short run of paragraphs. Findings that only confirm what was already known can be handled in a sentence.

Explain the finding before you compare it

For each result, offer the mechanism or reason you think produced it, then bring in the studies that agree and disagree. Doing it in that order keeps you as the one making the argument. Reversing it turns the discussion into a second literature review.

Account for what did not fit

Unexpected and null results need explanation, not silence. Offer the plausible accounts — a measurement issue, a population difference, an effect genuinely absent — and say which you find most likely and why. Reviewers trust papers that engage their own anomalies.

Write limitations as boundaries on the claim

Name the specific limits that change how far your conclusion travels, and say in which direction each one is likely to bias the result. A limitation stated with its consequence is useful; a list of generic caveats is not. Two to four real ones beat eight ritual ones.

Size the implications to the evidence

State what changes for theory, practice, or policy if your finding holds, hedged to match the strength of your design. A single cross-sectional study supports a suggestion, not a recommendation. Keep the verbs proportional: “indicates”, “suggests”, and “demonstrates” are not interchangeable.

Make the future work specific

Replace “further research is needed” with the study you would actually run next — the design, the population, or the measure that would resolve what you could not. One concrete sentence here is worth more than a paragraph of general encouragement.

Interpretation, not a second results section

The most common structural failure in a discussion is repetition: the same findings, in the same order, with the numbers copied across. Nothing is added, and the reader who has just read the results notices immediately. The discussion has a different job, which is to say what the findings mean and why they came out that way.

A quick diagnostic is to count statistics in your discussion. If test statistics, confidence intervals, and p-values appear frequently, you are probably restating rather than interpreting. Referring back to a result in words — “the improvement in the trained group” — is usually enough, since the numbers are one section away.

Weak: “Accuracy in the trained group was significantly higher than in the control group.” Stronger: “Training improved accuracy, and the size of that gain is consistent with an attentional account rather than a knowledge account, since the effect appeared on speeded trials and not on untimed ones.” The second sentence could not have been written from the results table alone.

The opening paragraph does most of the work

Discussions that begin with a summary of the study — “this study investigated the relationship between…” — waste their most valuable position. The reader already knows what you investigated. What they want, and what editors look for when skimming, is the answer.

A workable opening paragraph does three things in four or five sentences: it answers the research question, states the single most important finding in words, and signals how confident you are. Only then does it preview the structure of the discussion, and often that preview is unnecessary. Draft the paragraph, delete its first sentence, and check whether it improved — it usually has.

This paragraph is also where a mismatch with your introduction becomes obvious. If the question you answer here is not quite the one you posed at the start, one of the two needs rewriting. That mismatch is one of the more frequent reasons a paper reads as unfocused without any single sentence being wrong.

Placing your findings among other people’s

Comparison is what turns a result into a contribution. For each key finding, say whether it replicates, extends, qualifies, or contradicts what is already published, and name the specific studies involved. Vague alignment — “this is consistent with previous research” — with three citations attached tells a reader nothing about which previous research or in what respect.

Contradictions deserve more space than agreements, because they are where the interesting explanation lives. When your finding conflicts with a published one, look for the concrete difference first: population, measure, timing, analysis, or context. A specific account of the divergence is a genuine contribution; “further work is needed to reconcile these findings” is an abdication.

Every source you engage with here should already exist in the introduction or the literature review. New citations occasionally appear in a discussion for a reason — a paper published while yours was under review, or an unexpected finding that sends you to a literature you had no reason to read before. Flag that reason rather than letting the reference arrive unexplained.

The limitations paragraph that helps you

Limitations are often written defensively, as a list of apologies that reviewers can quote back. Written well, they do the opposite: they show you understand what your design can and cannot establish, and they pre-empt the criticism by handling it first. The reviewer who finds a limitation you already named and bounded has much less to object to.

The useful pattern is limitation, direction, consequence. “The sample was drawn from one institution, so the norms of that setting may have amplified the effect; the finding should be treated as applying to comparable institutional contexts until it is tested elsewhere.” That sentence tells a reader what to do with your result rather than merely conceding a flaw.

Leave out limitations that apply to every study ever run. Self-report is imperfect, samples are never infinite, and no design controls everything. Include only the limits that a reader would otherwise use to reach a different conclusion — and never use the paragraph to dismiss a real problem with a hedge.

Implications without overreach

The gap between what a study shows and what its authors claim it shows is where credibility is usually lost. Correlational designs do not license causal verbs; a single trial does not license a practice recommendation; a laboratory effect does not license a policy proposal. Match your verbs and modals to your design and the claim will survive review.

Practical implications are strongest when they are specific about who would do what differently. “These findings have implications for teaching practice” is unfalsifiable. “If the effect depends on same-session feedback, then feedback timetabled for the following week is unlikely to produce it, which matters for courses that batch marking” names an audience and an action.

Theoretical implications work the same way. Say which account your finding supports, which it strains, and what the strained account would need to add to accommodate it. That is a contribution a later paper can build on, and it is considerably more interesting than a claim of general importance.

What goes wrong, and what to do instead

Repeating the results with the same statistics attached.

Refer to findings in words and spend the sentence on why they came out that way. If a paragraph contains no explanation, it belongs in the results.

Introducing data that never appeared in the results section.

Move the analysis into the results and discuss it here. A number appearing for the first time in the discussion reads as an afterthought and invites a reviewer query.

Closing on “further research is needed in this area”.

Name the study. Which design, which population, which measure would settle the question your data left open?

Listing generic limitations — small sample, limited generalizability — with no consequence attached.

Give each limitation a direction and an effect on the conclusion. Cut any that would apply equally to every paper in the field.

Passing over findings that contradict your hypothesis.

Give the inconvenient result a paragraph and your best explanation for it. Papers that address their own anomalies are more persuasive than papers that appear to have none.

Using causal language for a design that cannot support it.

Replace “led to” and “caused” with “was associated with” unless the design justifies the stronger claim, and check the abstract for the same slippage.

Questions writers ask about this

How long should a discussion section be?

Typically a quarter to a third of the paper, and roughly comparable in length to the introduction. It is usually the longest section after the results in empirical papers. If the discussion is running much longer, the cause is often repetition of the results rather than genuine argument.

What tense should I use in the discussion?

Past tense for your own findings and for what specific prior studies did, present tense for interpretation and for what is generally true. So: “accuracy improved in the trained group, which suggests that attention is the limiting factor”. The mixture is normal and helps readers separate evidence from inference.

What is the difference between a discussion and a conclusion?

The discussion interprets the findings in detail, comparing them with existing work and bounding the claims. The conclusion is much shorter and answers the “so what” — the contribution and its consequence — without new interpretation. Many journals merge them into a single section, in which case the final one or two paragraphs do the conclusion’s job.

Can I use first person in the discussion?

In most fields, yes, and it is often clearer when you are marking an inference as yours: “we interpret this as evidence that…” separates your reasoning from the data more honestly than an impersonal construction. Follow your target journal, and keep the first person for interpretive moves rather than for narrating the writing.

Where do limitations go — the discussion or the conclusion?

Usually near the end of the discussion, after the interpretation and before the implications, so that readers understand the boundaries before they reach the recommendations. Some journals ask for a separate Limitations subheading, and some theses give them a section of their own. Placing them last of all, after the implications, tends to undercut the paper’s own conclusion.
