Why your eyes skip your own errors
Reading is prediction. Your brain builds an expectation of the next few words and confirms it with a glance rather than reading each character, which is why fluent reading is fast. In your own text, the prediction comes from memory of what you meant, so it is nearly always confirmed — even when the page says something else. You read the intended sentence, not the typed one.
This is why proofreading advice that amounts to “concentrate harder” fails. Effort does not disable prediction; unfamiliarity does. Every technique that works is a way of making your own text feel like someone else’s: a delay, a different typeface, a voice, a broken sequence.
It also explains why you catch errors instantly in a friend’s draft. You have no memory of their intention, so you have nothing to predict from and you read what is actually there. The goal of self-proofreading is to manufacture that same ignorance about your own work.
What each technique is actually doing
The time gap erases your memory of the phrasing. After a day, you no longer recall which of two versions of a sentence you kept, so you read the survivor properly. This is the highest-yield technique and the one deadlines destroy first, which is an argument for finishing drafts earlier rather than for proofreading harder.
Changing medium and typeface breaks the visual pattern your eye has memorized. Reading aloud recruits a second system — articulation — that has no access to your intention and cannot skip words. Reverse order removes narrative momentum, so nothing carries you past a broken clause.
Notice that none of these look for errors. They remove the conditions under which errors are invisible, and then your ordinary competence does the finding. That is why combining two of them beats doing any one twice.

Keep a list of the mistakes you personally make
Everyone has a private error set, and it is remarkably stable. Yours might be a comma splice before “however,” a habit of writing “data is,” singular and plural slipping inside long noun phrases, or a preposition you always get wrong after a particular verb. Once you know the list, you can search for it rather than reading for it.
Build the list from feedback: every correction a supervisor, reviewer, or proofreader makes goes on it, with a one-line example. After three or four rounds of comments the list stops growing, because you are not making new mistakes — you are making the same six.
Then use search. A find for “however” catches your comma splices in seconds. A find for “this ” at the start of a sentence catches vague reference. A find for “which” catches restrictive clauses that should have been “that.” This is the fastest proofreading you will ever do, and it improves every time you add a line.
What grammar software will and will not catch
Automated checks are good at what they can see locally: agreement inside a clause, doubled words, obvious punctuation, a misspelling that is not another real word. They are unreliable on anything requiring your intention — a “form” you meant as “from,” a sentence that is grammatical but says the opposite of what you meant, a citation attached to the wrong claim after a paragraph split.
Treat every suggestion as a question rather than a correction, especially around technical terms and discipline-specific constructions, where tools frequently want to simplify a sentence into inaccuracy. If you cannot say why a change is an improvement, do not accept it.
The division of labor that works: let software take the mechanical first pass so your attention is free, then spend your own passes on the things it cannot judge — whether the sentence says what you meant, whether the citation belongs there, whether the paragraph still follows the one before it.
